I will now share with you how I plan on conquering this year in hopes of unlocking a better me throughout the process:
1. Put Yourself First
I always try to put myself first but sometimes it doesn’t work out as I tend
to feel guilty and responsible for other people. I now say ‘I gotta put me
first Lucious’, a quip from the series Empire and it has been great so far. I
no longer do things that don’t bring me joy and no longer think of what others
might say. If you put yourself first, your body and soul will reward you. Make
time dedicated to yourself and time to spend with your loved ones.
2. Plan, Action, Reward
The calendar app on my phone is tired of me. Any and everything I can put a date and time to, I jot down there. Since my phone is always with me, I won’t forget assignments due, meetings I need to attend, and just general things I need to do. I now also plan my week in advance, especially when it comes to studying. Every day, I now study for 4 hours minimum just so that I can get ahead of the game. The reward in all of this is that I have more time to myself and more time to do the things that bring me joy.
3. Say ‘NO!’
I have an ongoing problem with a two-lettered word but don’t be worried
as I am learning to use it often now. I now assess when asked to do something.
I look at if it benefits me or will tire me out. If it falls in the tire-me-out
block, I immediately say no and keep it moving. Sometimes it is not easy, but you
live you learn.
4. Mind, Body, Soul
As a student, you might air trust me, but that is not advisable. I find it
easier to have quick meals during the week such as instant porridge and noodles
while during the weekend, I pull out my Chopped expertise to cook a full meal.
I find that this works for me, and it might you too. When it comes to the body
and keeping fit, I play hockey and will be taking up running again. All
combined will feed my soul and make me a better person overall.
5. Perseverance
Mara yoh! University is not for the weak. Especially if you lose yourself
and don’t have goals that you are working towards. I advise that you all sit down before the semester starts so that you write down your goals. Section your
goals into ‘Academics’ and ‘Personal’ and write short-term and long-term goals
in both sections. This will help you stay motivated throughout the year and
whenever you attain a goal, reward yourself. Yes, it won’t be easy, and sacrifices
might have to be made but if it is to your benefit, it will be worthwhile in
the end.
I hope my
little list of 5 helps you throughout the year. I know writing this down and
sharing it will help me stay accountable for what I have written. And in a great
song by Prince Kaybee and Msaki, ‘Fetch Your Life’.
Good luck to
you
