Without Merit

Yes, I read a Collen Hoover book and I enjoy reading Colleen Hoover books. I just want to get this out there before I get backlash from people that don’t enjoy her style of writing and don’t call her work books. I enjoy reading Hoover books and it is a shame that they are popular which might be why they don't hold weight in others' eyes. They hold weight in my eyes and I think that that is all that matters.

I read Without Merit, and it was refreshing compared to all her other books that I have read. I say this because all the other books I have read mostly focused on a romantic relationships and Without Merit focused on various relationships. Before I start, I want us to all agree that Honor and Merit are weird names for children. I am one to talk as I named my first plant child Shaquandalyn.

I enjoyed how the book did not focus solely on the romantic relationship between Merit and Sagen but on Merit and her family relations. It focused on family dynamics, lost connections within the family and how they all worked to rekindle those lost connections. Merit felt that she was the black sheep in the family as everyone got along and she was the one that had to keep secrets that when released, paved the way for trust.

Everyday topics such as depression, cheating, love, and family secrets are touched on in this book. I especially liked how Without Merit spoke about depression and the fact that one can not detect it without seeking help. The way Luck summed up how he figured out that he might be depressed was simple yet powerful. He said, ”I used to feel like I was on top of the world. Then one day, I noticed that it felt like I was no longer on top of the world. I was just floating around inside of it. And then eventually, it felt like the world was on top of me.”
