I loved loved reading this. The Nigerian bits and pieces incorporated in this book made me more interested in their culture and culinary.
Twins, born together and stayed inseparable, drifted apart when a horrible thing happened to one of them. They blamed each other and this created a wedge between them.
Now, two separate people, they lived their lives carrying that hurt; catering and cradling it until it grew too large for them to bare alone and effected the people around them. This soon came to a stop when, after many years of sorrow, they finslly spoke about it and their love for each other resumed.
Well, that is how I would describe this book to anyone who asked but with more "It was so amazing!" and "You wouldn't believe what happened next!" interjected in between. Butter Honey Pig Bread by Francesca Ekwuyasi had it all, the love, the passion, the adventure, strong characters that told their tales and most importantly the food. If I could be granted a fictional meal, it would be anything Taiye made.
It also involved Nigerian folklore and beliefs in the Ogba nje, a said to be evil spirit that plagued a family with misfortunes. Yet, this Ogba nje chose to stay in the human realm and built a family blessed with fortunes in more ways than one.
I have so much to say yet I'll cut it right here and tell you to go read it for yourself. Go experience a world different from yours and mine.
