The National Botanic Gardens

Saturday morning is a great day to take a walk, preferably in the National Botanic Gardens located on Orban Street, Windhoek. The gardens form a part of the National Botanical Research Institute in Namibia and are a protracted area. The aim is to protect and promote the Namibian flora and this is achieved with recreational activities such as going on walks through the garden.

My aunt and I opted for the guided tour, on a Saturday morning. We got to walk on a concrete path where we could ask questions about the plants and trees that we found interesting. The morning group was split into three guided tours and we opted for the walk that took us to the lilies instead of the desert and dam tour. Unfortunately, we did not get to see the lilies bloom but we will be back.

Our group used the paved path and took a turn at the Damara grave, and visited the Quiver forest. We then made our way down to the Dam, walked all the way up Lily Walk and finally made it to our starting point. On the walk, we got to see various plants such as the Windhoek Aloe, the Modesta which was my favourite by far.

Some of the plants I got to see were the Grewia, it has edible berries (Eentantahe in Oshiwambo). I also saw Ocimum americanum, Trumpet Thorns, Otoptera burchelli, Oxalis, Quiver trees and Ozikiya african. All theses plants are native to Namibia eventhough some are planted here in from all over the country.

Overall, it was a great walk and I enjoyed it. I got to meet women from Germany and the UK. I will be going back to the gardens on the other walks and explore the Quiver Tree forest better.
